Postgrad Law students Isabel Jess and Kate Licudi recently competed in this year’s National Client Interviewing Competition representing OBU. The competition is an annual event with the aim of promoting the development of lawyers’ practical skills and to enable students to practise them at a high level.
The students work in pairs in a simulated law office, interviewing and advising an actor playing the role of a client. They are assessed according to criteria which take into account interpersonal skills as well as ability to handle legal problems.
Students from 30 law schools competed in six regional competitions with the top 12 schools qualifying for the National Finals, and Isabel and Kate placed in the top six.
“The Graduate Diploma in Law course is intense,” said Kate, “and I wasn’t sure I had time to devote to the competition but I am so glad I made space for it. It was a great experience and I really enjoyed working in a team with Issy, whom I hadn’t previously met. It was incredible that we had only been taught law for a few months but our preparation and studies made us feel like we were able to advise clients on their legal positions and options just as any professional lawyer would. With a possible return to face-to-face competitions next year, I would definitely recommend it to any other law students.”
